CEB trade unions to launch third phase of trade union action from Sunday

Colombo, Sept. 19 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Electricity Board (CEB) trade unions will commence the third phase of their ongoing trade union action at midnight on Sunday (21), Sri Lanka Electricity Board Technicians’ Association Chairman Kosala Abeysinghe told the Daily Mirror.

He said the phase will continue until the 24th, after which further action will be decided. “We have warned this government to listen. This is a response to the arrogance of the minister and the director general in particular. But if the president continues to respond in the same way, we will be compelled to escalate matters further,” Abeysinghe warned.

The trade union action, which began on September 4 with a work-to-rule campaign, saw its first phase conclude at midnight on Monday (15). The second phase involved employees taking sick leave on the 17th and 18th.

Abeysinghe stressed that the upcoming third phase would be a decisive moment for the future of the energy sector.

Never giving to their demands which arecunreasonable and unjustifiable . Bring the forces if they vacate their position to attend to the maintenance. If they block the road give them tear gas treatment and arrest them.People are firmly with the government.

Citizens of SL does not have faith on CEB and it's workers. As trade unionist said the CEB symbol is your mom who nurture your children and families but your mom was fed by the poor citizens of SL who consumed electricity. Generation projects and distribution projects were built and handed over by the government with it's fund and the loaned money. In response to that the workers made their territory within the CEB, did utmost corruption and disregard the people who sacrifice for them. Now it is time to come out your seldom and feel the heat of general public.

The CEB workers are overpaid and inefficient. The CEB is overstaffed as successive governments filled it with their supports. Way back in the 70s when I did my inplant training the CEB was a profit making institution. Our dream ( how did electrical power engineer) was to join the CEB. However it was not possible as there were no vacancies.

Yes your comment is true. Cream of the engineers who selected to local faculties selected as Electrical Engineers after tough competition. Out of them very limited numbers selected to CEB. But that academic performance does not reflect when they come to management of government institution.

Let’s get this straight. Any salary increment given , Bonus etc is not coming from the President or Ministers pockets. It will come from OUR money? So the question is as citizens are we ready to pay these guys every thing they are asking? It’s high time people of this country take this in to their own hands if the government and the police are no doing their job.

What's humourous and ironic about this situation is that the present Govt. was the main culprit in organizing these protests; not only of the CEB but in the entire country to bring the downfall of previous Govts. I find it extremely hypocritical that the people are asking to stop these trade union action and to get together with the Govt. to develop the country??? I just wish you had said the same thing when earlier Govts were in power. Such double standards of our people. I say "go ahead and strike" so that the present Govt. also learns what it is to feel like when Trade Unions take this type of acion to destabilize the Govt.

People are fed up with CEB and its employees in some way responsible for the bankruptcy of the country. Reform or go away, the country must live. People will kick you out themselves if people are inconvenienced in any way.

For 5 years of planned brainwashing of people to believe that all 225 1 are corrupt and stole billions of state funds and only JVP comrades are clean without any blemish and they are the only hope was very effectively produced results. Now little by little truth is coming out. How people were deceived to make donations in cash and kind to the committed saviours of the poor. Comrades boasted how clothing was given, given money for fuel and even plantains from the back yard. Performance is far from satisfactory. They find the necessity to take control all activities the only way is to declare emergency. Power and transport sector are essential services. If by design the two sectors go on a pseudo trade union activity and for the perseverance of public order emergency can be declared. People will fall for it. Just a thought!!!!!!!!!
