Bus operators in hot water over unfair fare hikes

Colombo, April 24 (Daily Mirror) - Police have warned that legal action will be taken against bus operators found charging fares above the approved rates, following a surge in public complaints.

Passengers have alleged that both Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses and privately operated services have been demanding higher-than-stipulated fares on several routes.

Police said inspections conducted jointly with officials from the National Transport Commission uncovered multiple instances of overcharging, confirming the concerns raised by commuters.

Authorities emphasized that, under Section 173 of the Motor Traffic Act, bus owners, drivers, and conductors are strictly prohibited from demanding or accepting fares exceeding those authorized under their route permits.

Police further noted that offenders will face legal consequences as part of ongoing efforts to protect passengers and enforce fare regulations.
