Bus driver involved in Nanu Oya accident arrested

The 62-year-old driver of the bus involved in the Nanu Oya fatal accident was arrested by the police this afternoon.

He was receiving treatment at the Nuwara Eliya Hospital for minor injuries following the mishap.

The initial probe revealed that the accident was due to reckless driving.

The careless and reckless driving may cause the fatal accidents. Thus the certain drivers are found to be intoxicated while driving. Therefore the duty of the police is to look into the incident thoroughly and in the veiw of the findings the driver should be prosecuted

The driver shall be punished for breaking a number of road rules - he was not supposed to take this road, assuming road signs were there to that effect. I saw the Thurstan college principal media briefing - it is a political talk, not expected from a person at such position. After expressing condolence to the victims at the start, the rest was mostly thanking the politicians including the Minister. It sounded like he was paid to do an election speech. Do not expect much from such school principals - one reason for this poorly planned, irresponsible trip.

Education ministry should specify a limited distance the 1 day school trip can be organised example 100 km from school radius and also inform all buses should return to school by 6 pm. With this type of guidelines very long trips can be avoided. Also all schools should not go on trip on the same day. One day school trip to nuwareliya is absurd, this distance needs atlease 2 days.
