Be alert on thefts by those impersonating police in civvies

Police warn the public to be alert on individuals who commit thefts while impersonating police officers in civvies.

Police said a number of complaints have been received on incidents of thefts by individuals who impersonate police officers in civvies while pretending to check baggage, vehicles, homes and motorcycles.

Police said no police officers, except for those from the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), CID or officers attached to special police units, conduct such checking and that those officers will also produce their official identity cards during such occasions.

During a raid conducted by police officers attached to police stations, one or several officers in the team would be in uniform.

Police advise people not to allow such inspections unless they reveal their identities and request the public to inform the nearest police station of any suspected incidents.(Ajith Siriwardana)

All police officers especially those going on raids or even traffic police should wear a camera fixed on their uniform, also a police registration database so that people can check (via app or online) the validity of those coming for a search. It is a must that a police officer attached to the nearest police station accompanies the CID, or special police team. As certain raids are confidential and the identity of Police in narcotics and certain criminal investigation teams are kept confidential, the area police needs to be present.

Home visits should be done with gramasewaka.Make it compulsory so that this issue can be minimized. Then when it comes to vehicles, make it compulsory to have a head cam so that such issues can be minimized too. Funny thing is most of the police constaples are only good at finding traffic violations and waste time. They hide themself when it comes to crime or robbery. This is also a failure pf police intelligence units. Are they sleeping.

The top brass of the Police Department should make changes to ensure that impersonators don't have a field day to bring disrepute to the Police Department. How will the Public know whether these so called representatives of the Police are HORA/POLICE ? It is paramount that a strategy adopted by the Police Dept. to safeguard the Public/Genuine Police Officers interest!!!!!!!!!!

How would one know that the IDs are genuine ?? Also there have been instances where robbers have been dressed in police uniforms , caŕrying arms amd hand cuffs etc. In such cases, how can the public identify genuine policemen?
