Colombo, March 30 (Daily Mirror) - A wild elephant that was struck by a speeding train early this morning on the Polonnaruwa–Batticaloa main railway line is now wandering through the village of Manikwela with severe leg injuries, wildlife officials said.

The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on the 29th near the Velikanda Sevapitiya area, as the express train was travelling from Batticaloa to Colombo.

According to C.A. Wanasinghe, the wildlife officer in Velikanda, the injured animal is a male elephant approximately 30 years old and about eight feet tall.

Residents say both hind legs of the elephant have been badly damaged in the collision.

“The elephant is moving along the main road and village byroads in a critical condition,” Mr. Wanasinghe said.

He added that a team from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, including Dr. Sameera Kalinguarachchi, the wildlife veterinarian from Giritale, has been dispatched to the area to provide treatment to the injured animal.
