Authorities directed to develop programme to maintain essential services for New Year

Colombo, April 4 (Daily Mirror)- President Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed officials to develop a formal programme aimed at maintaining essential and public services seamlessly during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.

The directive has been given to guarantee the smooth operation of essential services without any disruptions during the festive season, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

The President has emphasized that institutions that fall under the essential category such as the Presidential Secretariat, the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministries of Defence, Health, Transport and Power and Energy must collaborate to prepare this programme jointly.

Additionally, for the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year season, the President has directed the security forces to execute a comprehensive programme to ensure public security and the maintenance of law and order across the country.

This country is a total failure if the president has to get involved to solve a well known annual seasonal increase in transport demand that happens every April. The Minister of Transport and the GMs of the transport services and others are incompetent or not empowered to do it. A more likely reason is the president is trying to score cheap popularity points by splashing this in the media which is not what we expect from a mature elder statesman of our country.

Most SL politicians will wait till the last moment or after the event occurs to react. Mentality is not forward looking for the country but only for themselves to ensure they continuously live the luxurious lifestyle. Only Ranil and a few others has some sense of duty and are looking out for the country and people. But their hands are tied currently with the wrong people on board with them.
