April workers’ remittance inflows hit US$ 454 mn

Workers’ remittance inflows continued their strong run in April as well with migrant Sri Lankan workers sending over US$ 450 million to their families who are undergoing difficult times.

Accordingly, the remittances for the month of April 2023 was recorded as US$ 454 million.

Taking to Twitter, Minister of Labour and Foreign employment Manusha Nanayakkara said that it’s a 83.4% increase compared to April 2022, where the remittances figures were recorded as US$ 248.9 million.

Further, the Minister stated that total remittance for this year stands at US$ 1867.2 million.

Don't merely depend on this ..it goes up and downs ..take some productive measurements to increase local productivity and expert increase and other means of incomes ..just merely depend on money come from workers is not always good .because many of them only send family expenses not to invest in Sri Lanka

2022 was a very bad year. Comparing 23 with 22 gives a distorted comparative result. 2021 and before gives a better comparison. In 21 Jan to Apr remittances stands at US $ 2424 m where as figure for same period 2023 is US $ 1867 m. There is nothing to brag and take credit for.

Urban elites use these dollars for their daily needs but they look down on these workers and say that these workers do not have a class. They also look down on them because these workers did not attend their so called majestic schools which produce Slenglish speaking crowd. When they have some hardship in getting their luxuries they join Aragalaya and sing , dance while consuming liquor and free food sponsored by Diaspora.
