Applications invited for Presidential Environment Awards – 2026



Colombo, April 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has commenced calling for applications for the “Presidential Environment Awards – 2026” programme.

The CEA has invited applications from interested parties before April 30, 2026, under three main categories: the “Industry Sector”, “Projects Sector”, and “Institutions, Media, and Social Sector”.

The “Industry Sector” comprises two sub-sectors, namely Large Scale and Small & Medium Scale industries. Under the Large Scale category, applications are called under 16 fields, including waste management and recycling facilities, chemical industries, vehicle service centres, food and beverage manufacturing, hotels, textile processing, pharmaceutical and personal care production, hospitals, rubber-based products, animal farms, apparel industries, tea processing factories, packaging industries with printing, mineral-related industries, timber and wood products, and metal, non-ferrous metal, machinery, electronic and electrical goods manufacturing industries.

For Small and Medium Scale industries, applications are invited under 14 categories, excluding hospitals and packaging industries with printing.

The “Projects Sector” includes renewable energy generation projects under three categories: mini hydro projects, solar power projects (excluding rooftop solar), and wind power projects.

The “Institutions, Media, and Social Sector” covers eight sub-sectors, including schools, government institutions, private sector organisations, local authorities engaged in solid waste management, police environmental units, non-governmental environmental organisations (NGOs), and environment-friendly innovations by schools, universities, tertiary institutions and open category applicants.

The media sector comprises two sub-sectors: mass media and social media. Mass media includes individual and institutional categories, while social media includes Facebook pages and YouTube channels. Evaluations will be conducted considering all language media together.

The evaluation will be carried out by expert panels relevant to each field, and their decision will be final. Winners will be awarded “Presidential Environment Awards” (Gold), “Silver Environment Awards”, “Bronze Environment Awards”, and “Merit Environment Awards”.

The awards, made from recycled aluminium cans, reflect an eco-friendly approach. The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in October 2026 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) under the patronage of the President.

This year’s programme will be conducted in line with the government policy “A Thriving Nation A Beautiful Life.”
