Another police constable on traffic duty knocked down

A police constable was killed after being knocked down by a tipper truck transporting sand at Puhuriya Junction on the Colombo-Kurunegala main Road last night, Police said.

They said the victim and two other police personnel attached to the Polgahawela police station, who were on mobile patrol, had been checking vehicles by the roadside when the tipper truck plying from Kantale to Kaduwela hit the police constable.

He was admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the tipper truck was arrested over the accident.

Department of Motor Traffic driving trials need to be reviewed and strict measures needs to be taken against examiners who are taking bribes to pass new drivers. Sri Lanka has many reckless drivers, question is how they got the driving license.

These are actually NOT accidents as the drivers of these vehicles just do not care about their driving. They know that even if they kill a person it is very easy to avoid jail by just bribing the police or using political power or contacts. Invariably a police officer at the relevant police station will take a large bribe and get the accused driver released from police custody by showing that the killing was accidental or due to a vehicle malfunction. Only if anomalies such as these are stopped can we stop these unwanted murders. Police are to be blamed for not taking the correct course of action irrespective of the drivers status , connections or bribery and corruption. There must be mandatory jail sentences for death or injury by careless driving and no interference whatsoever with the legal process such as in western countries.

Another policeman standing in the middle of the road at night, in the dark, wearing dark colour clothes. Please issue them with high visibility, reflective clothing. Its not the 18th century.

After the Independence roundabout accident the motor traffic police should have been vigilant when they perform duties on the toad where traffic is heavy n due to bad weather oncoming vehicles are invisible. Besides, they should wear illuminated gears especially in the nights. The OICs in the area should pay attention to this simple process common sense.

These policemen stand in the middle of the road in a very unsafe manner. Since there are many reckless drivers overtaking vehicles from anywhere , they cannot see the policemen standing on the middle of the road.

Sad about police officers being knocked down by vehicles, plying at high speed. Speeding vehicles should be controlled. Space between vehicles as in western countries be followed here too. In the dark it is difficult to spot the police officers directing traffic standing on the middle of the road, a bright illuminated belt or a west should be worn by police officers directing traffic in the dark. Seeking advise from police administrations in developed nations will be useful.

When a country runs crooked everything goes crooked look at most of drivers behavior extremely third class or forth class guys have no substance no respect no decency no feelings this fellows are typical good to put in jungles to work daddy fields agriculture framing sectors shouldn't alowe to hold license in anyform to drive specially heavy and medium vheicles busses three wheels even for motorcycle need to be look in to very serouly far toomany careless crazy idiots on roads its so dangerous to drive even for safe drivers among this monkeys they drive so bloody dangerously no one take action or report directly crime stoppers before they crash every vehicle should have a hotline number put in the back of the vheicles if complains are greater then suspend license and produce courts sri Lanka must have a system before handing the license to all this fellows majority not suitable to drive due to very poor education basic common sence and driver safty road safty other road user's safty
