Ammonia gas tragedy: Factory manager arrested

The manager of the rubber factory in Bellapitiya, Horana was today arrested in connection with an incident where five people were killed and several others were hospitalized after being exposed to an ammonia gas leak.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said the manager, A.K.D.R Edirisinghe, resident of Boralesgamuwa, was charged with negligence and the failure to take adequate safety precautions.

Penal code provisions or current labour law in sri lanka not adequate to give a punishment he deserves. Laws must be enacted to pinpoint to possible offences like these

In according to media news the first person who died was a person who worked with chemicals at the factory. For sure,he knows about precautionary measures he should be taken before handling chemicals. It means,negligence of the person. Though the overall responsibility lies with the manager the staff also must take instructions serious. As an example - how much you tell people to separate garbage and keep how many of us do it properly and the council workers are at risk.

This story is in the news because more than one person died. There are hundreds per year of work place accidents that go unreported that had caused severe bodily harm. Protections are far few for workers who are subjected to handling chemicals without proper safety gear.
