Adverse weather conditions destroy vegetable plantations in Badulla

Colombo, Oct. 20 (Daily Mirror) - Rains coming down in torrents has destroyed vegetable plantations in the Badulla District, it was reported yesterday.

District Secretary Badulla Panduka Abeywardena said carrot, potato, beans, leaks and cabbage plantations in areas such as Welikada, Keppetipola and Habaragala in the district have been destroyed due to adverse weather conditions.

In addition a number of large trees have been uprooted due to strong winds in the area several roads have been blocked. Some houses have been damaged due to continuous rains.

Some resevoirs including Rajangana , Kalawewa , Deduru Oya have started overflowing as of yesterday. Those living in the lowlying were asked to be vigilant.

Some areas received rainfall exceeding 100mm with the highest fall of 121mm being reported feom Ratnapura while Hanwella in the Colombo District has recorded a rainfall of 112mm, Galle received a rainfall 93mm,. Kalutara received a rainfall of 84mm, Kurunegala 70mm and Matara 65mm.

Landslide warnings were issued for few districts including Ratnapura, Kegalle, Badulla, Matale, Kandy and Nuwara Elya Districts.

Meanwhile one person has been reported drowned in Tambuttegama.

The Department of Meteorology forecasted that inter monsoon rains currently prevailing is expected to last till end December.
