ASP and sergeant arrested in bribery probe



Colombo, January 5 (Daily Mirror) - An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the Nuwara Eliya Assistant Superintendent of Police Office and a woman police sergeant from the Kalmunai Assistant Superintendent of Police Office were arrested today (05) in connection with a bribery investigation conducted by the Commission on Bribery and Corruption.

According to the Commission, the Nuwara Eliya ASP was arrested at around 10:50 a.m. for allegedly demanding a mobile phone and Rs. 72,000 on multiple occasions as bribes to allow an unmarried police constable from Wellawelli Police Station to obtain permission from the Superintendent of Police in charge of the Batticaloa Division to work from home.

The woman police sergeant, serving at the Kalmunai ASP office, was arrested at the same time in connection with the same investigation, accused of demanding similar bribes on several occasions. Later, at around 3:00 p.m., investigative officers from the Commission conducted further arrests at the Kalmunai ASP office.

The arrested officers are scheduled to be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court and the Kalmunai Magistrate’s Court for further legal proceedings.
