400 tons of substandard steel worth over Rs. 100 Mn seized

Colombo, June 10 (Daily Mirror) - In a major crackdown on the distribution of inferior construction materials, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has seized 400 tons of substandard steel, estimated to be worth over Rs. 100 million.

The raid was carried out at a warehouse in Negombo following several days of investigation and surveillance.

According to officials, the steel stock had been secretly transported at night from a manufacturing facility in Kahathuduwa to the Negombo warehouse.

Acting on the intelligence gathered, CAA officers launched the operation and took the entire stock into custody.

The seizure highlights ongoing concerns about the quality of construction materials in the market.

Under a Gazette notification issued on January 25, 2008, all steel bars and wires used for concrete reinforcement—whether ribbed or plain—are required to have certification from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLS).
