Claiming that the 2024 budget will be totally based on IMF proposals, NPP MP Vijitha Herath said today that the government is planning to impose new taxes such as Wealth Tax and Heritage Tax from January, 2024.
Addressing the NPP Pathadumbara electoral convention, he said it was customary for the Finance Ministry Secretary to publish a newspaper advertisement calling for public proposals for the budget and that surprisingly, no such practice has been adopted this year.
He said the budget for 2024 will be based on IMF proposals just as the electricity bill was increased after the IMF condition to issue the second tranche of the IMF Extended Fund Facility.
"The electricity tariffs were increased again recently as the IMF wanted the CEB to earn Rs. 30 billion more," he said.
The MP said the IMF has requested the government to introduce new taxes through the 2024 budget to increase state revenue from the current 9 percent to 12 percent.
“The government is now planning to impose new taxes. A Wealth Tax and Heritage Tax are to be introduced from January 2024. Income tax files too have been proposed to be opened for everyone above 18 years from January next year,” he said.(Ajith Siriwardana)

The total of the Parliamentary expenses, MP/Minister salaries vehicle costs, office costs air travel all that will be saved that can be used otherwise

Taxes are fine as long as the people's incomes are fine too. When we earn so little, it's a hand to mouth existence for 90% of the nation, how do we pay such taxes, especially the poor senior citizens??!!! Does the IMF not advise the government to increase the income of the people???

All these people complaining about Tax don't even pay their own income taxes. Most of them do not even reach the minimum tax brackets. Whats wrong with a Wealth and Inheritance tax? If you have enough money to buy things you do not need just to show off your status, yes. Tax them. All these NPP supporters hoping for welfare checks so they can just be lazy at home well fed via the people who actually put in effort to earn more. There has been no practical proposals by NPP on how we can increase the income of the government. And "finding money looted by politicians" is not an income stream. Its something that needs to be done but will not help at all in the long term. Correct policies and getting rid of welfare and subsidies for people who can afford to work and survive is the most effective way forward. Can't afford it even with a job, change your lifestyle or develop your career to earn more.
