Colombo, September 27 (Daily Mirror) - At least 11 people were admitted to the Mahiyangana Hospital after a van carrying pilgrims veered off the road and crashed into a tree in the Sorabora one-mile post area on the Giradurukottawa main road in Mahiyangana last night (26), police said.
The injured, residents of Kailagoda in Badulla, included five men, six women and a 10-year-old child. The van driver was also among those seriously injured.
According to police, the group had been returning to Badulla after a pilgrimage to Anuradhapura when the driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the van to veer off the road and collide with a large tree.
Witnesses and police officers worked together to rescue the victims who were trapped inside the mangled vehicle before rushing them to the Mahiyangana Hospital.
Hospital sources said the van was severely damaged in the crash and the condition of several of the injured remains critical.
