Twin grenade explosions in Vavuniya

Two grenades exploded at two separate locations in Vavuniya a short while ago but did not cause any damage or casualties. The Vavuniya police said that men riding on motorbikes lobbed the grenades near a lake and bunker before fleeing.

Election monitors say minor election related incidents were reported so far in several areas including Jaffna and Gampaha. The Centre for Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE) said that there were more than 6 minor incidents reported during the early hours of this morning.

Sri Lanka’s historic Presidential election is now underway. Reports from Colombo indicated that a large number of voters had begun to cast their vote as soon as polling stations opened this morning. Voting ends at 4 this evening.

At least 4 explosion sounds were heard in Jaffna over the past half an hour early this morning, residents in Jaffna told Daily Mirror online. Sources said they believe the sounds emanated from devices used to create a large noise but not cause any damage.

The ruling UPFA government claims the so called disappearance of a journalist attached to Lanka e News web site is a “staged drama” and has lodged a complaint over this with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya.

The Indian embassy in Italy received an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in a postage packet prompting stepping up of security at the mission, PTI reported. The packet which had the sender’s name as LTTE from Italy, Indian Ambassador Arif Khan said.
