A suspected LTTE supporter was arrested in London, over his involvement in an incident at the Sri Lankan High Commission on February 4th where a group had attempted to burn the Sri Lankan flag, the Foreign Ministry said.

The Australian Refugee Action Coalition says 45 Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers are being rescued from a boat drifting near Christmas Island. Refugee activists alerted border protection authorities about the boat after receiving distress calls this afternoon.

Russia to give arms loan to Lanka

Russia will give Sri Lanka a $300 million loan to buy arms and dual use equipment from it, an agreement regarding which will be inked during the upcoming visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a top Russian official said according to PTI.

EU nations have decided to suspend Sri Lanka's preferential trade status because of the island's human rights record and will make the formal move later this month. However the suspension would not come into effect until six months later, officials said.

A suspect who was detained for allegedly trafficking arms from China for the LTTE during the war was further remanded today by the Colombo Chief Magistrate. The CID meanwhile told the court that they are trying to identify more suspects over the case.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that 1422 army deserters had surrendered during the amnesty period that was put in place yesterday. The deserters are now in camps and they will be sent to their respective regiments.
