Sydney Old Peterites romp home to victory

It was a beautiful spring day in Sydney, Australia – ideal weather for a game of cricket. And so it was. It was the annual Josephian- Peterite limited over cricket encounter.

In a thrilling game played at the Kareela Reserve in Doonside last Sunday the flamboyant Peterite team led by Trevine Nicholas once again clinched the victors’ trophy.
Winning the toss, the Josephians opted to occupy the crease first. Although losing an early wicket they made good progress in the first half of their allocated overs but the Peterite bowlers displayed their grit and determination with a flurry of quick wickets after the drinks break and limited the Joes to 174 runs in just 31 overs.

Following the lunch break the Peterite batsmen took lease of the crease and very quickly got stuck into the Josephian bowlers carting them to all corner of the ground. They lost their first wicket at the 50 run mark and the Joes looked all at sea. The runs came at a steady pace although the Josephian bowlers turned on some pressure in the middle overs. The Peterite batsmen taunted the Joes keeping their run rate to match the Joes at various over stages but preserved their wickets. They reached the required 175 runs in the 32nd over.

All of the best performances went to the Peterites. Best batsman - Krishane Perera, Best bowler – Nipuna Weerasuriya, Shanika Abeygunaratne claimed the Best Fielder as well as the Man of the Match trophies for his overall performance. However, it must be mentioned that the game was played in true sporting spirit that has been a hallmark of the two leading Colombo Catholic Colleges.

A reasonable number of spectators came in during the day with families and kiddies enjoying the gift of the weather-gods. With the major sponsor being Dilmah all spectators enjoyed Dilmah Iced Tea which freely flowed. The usual music and fun commentary kept the crowd in good spirits.
