One of Sri Lanka’s former soccer stars A. Zainulabdeen is no more. He died after a brief illness yesterday morning leaving behind his wife and children and was over 70 years old.
Zainulabdeen was one of the beat inside right players who starred for Victory Sports Club during the late fifties and sixties. He not only captained Victory SC but also played for the national team. He was later the coach of Victory and was the technical advisor of the national team.
Zaibulabdeen was also in the national team that qualified to play in the Pre-Olympic qualifying round match against Israel in Israel in 1968.
He later became the president of the Colombo Football League for four years. Thereafter he was the president of the City Football League. As a coach of Victory he produced about 80 per cent of the soccer stars in the Slave Island area alone.
Zainulabdeen’s janaza took place at the Jawatte Muslim Burial ground at 4 p.m. today.
