Global Shapers Colombo Hub attend ‘Meet the Leader’ session with Finance Minister

Members of the Global Shapers Colombo Hub held a ‘Meet the Leader’ session with Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake recently.

The session was held in the Ministry and the Shapers used the opportunity to discuss the finer points of the 2016 budget with the Minister.

The points raised included the global move to impact investment, renewable energy, the issue of over-subsidization and handouts, and effective spending to ensure an innovative economy.

The Colombo Shapers also presented several points and suggestions to the Minister that they believed the new budget should reflect – such as to Increase allocations made to the Ministry of Agriculture and construct more storages to store paddy surplus or any other surplus and a higher budgetary allocation for education but beyond the traditional teacher training and curriculum re-development as well as readdressing the severe inter and intra-regional imbalances in distribution of educational materials, human and other resources.

Part of the mandate of the Global Shapers is to meet and learn from leaders in their communities, as well as give them a chance to get to know the local members of the Global Shapers Communities. In this regard the Global Shapers of the Colombo Hub will continue to conduct the Meet The Leader Sessions.
The Global Shapers Community is an initiative of the World Economic Forum. It is a network of hubs developed and led by young people between the age of 20 and 30; that are exceptional in their potential, their achievements and their drive to make a contribution to their communities.

There are currently over 450 hubs in over 150 countries with over 4,500 Shapers globally who are a part of the Community. Shapers are highly motivated individuals who have a great potential for future leadership roles in society.

They are selected on the basis of their achievements, leadership potential, and commitment to make a difference. Through the Global Shapers Community, Shapers are provided with opportunities to connect with the worldwide network of Global Shapers, to network with other World Economic Forum communities, and to represent the voice of youth at World Economic Forum events.

The Colombo Hub was established in 2012 by Young Global Leader Asanga Abeyagoonsekara who thus became the Founding Curator.

This year Stephanie Siriwardhana was one of the 50 Shapers selected world-wide to attend the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting (the flagship event) held in Davos, Switzerland and Anoka Abeyrathne attended the Annual Meeting of the New Champions held this time in Dalian, China as one of 40 Shapers.
