The Cabinet has decided to suspend the Chinese-funded Colombo Port City Project as it had started without relevant approvals from concerned institutions, Minister Rajitha Senaratne said today.

Addressing the weekly cabinet news briefing in Colombo, the minister said the Cabinet had yet consented to a decision to advise the company which is carrying out the port city project to present approvals obtained from the relevant authorities within two weeks.

“Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe made the proposal based on the interim report submitted by the committee appointed to review and submit recommendations to the Cabinet Sub Committee on the Port City Project. The report states the project had been started without relevant approvals,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Traditionally Sri Lanka had maintained good relationship with China, India and likewise with Japan. Katunayake airport, Colombo courts complex and BMICH are generous gifts from these countries to our country which to this day make great contributions. No doubt there is a need to evaluate the pros and cons of this project on a greater scheme of things by the relevant experts. I can only hope that finally sense will prevail and the country will not lose out to any cheap party politics.

implications on environment should not be rushed and it may proceed. But there is no justification to award it to China or any other country on a 99 year lease a vast land in the Capital. What happened to the so called patriots when the project was offered?

Giving land adjoining sea to another country is a huge threat to National Security. These must be considered before a new start. So, suspend is good for now, but clear the points and disclose to the general public with sensible points.

    KADMIN Thursday, 05 March 2015 10:50 AM

This is a good move, but I would still vote for a F1 track to be built inland. Even though the ex-government painted a picture of luring tourists by promoting the port-city, I would reckon the underlying factors are to gain an unwarranted access to that part of the world. I wonder how crafty the agreement was from CHINA. I do believe SL should have an impartial grounds for any country to deal with. Port city would have been a real threat for the whole region. Well Played.
