Kahawatte murder case

Ratnapura preceding High Court Judge Rohan Jayasuriya yesterday handed down the death sentence on SLPP candidate Premalal Jayasekara and two others upon conviction for murder charges.  

The two others are former Sabagaragamuwa Provincial Council member Aruna Nilantha Jayakody and former Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabha chairman Manikka Waduge Wajira Dharsana de Silva. The case was heard in conformity with health guidelines issued in view of COVID- 19. The convicts appeared before court on the day.   
They have been charged for the murder of Sunil Perera alias Shantha Dodamgoda and causing injuries to two others while opening fire at a group of people engaged in putting up decorations in the Kahawatte town in view of an election rally of former President Maithripala Sirisena in the run up for the 2015 Presidential Election.   
Each convict was ordered to pay Rs.200,000 as compensation to the next of kin of the murder victim. Besides, each was ordered to pay Rs.100, 000 to Mohamed Ilpam.  

 

 


The Attorney General indicted seven accused in this regard on September 13, 2016 and four of them were later exonerated from the charges.
