UNP MP Sarath Fonseka said today the governments that were in office since 2010 should be held responsible for the series of terror attacks on Easter Sunday and pointed out that it was not fair to blame only the IGP.
He told a news conference that the terror attacks might have been planned for quite a sometime and as such both governments should be held responsible for the attacks.
“It is reported that the incumbent government was informed of imminent terror attacks in the country. However, though my security personnel has known about imminent attacks but I was not informed,” the MP said. “There are many who are calling for the sacking of the IGP and held responsible for failing to convey the information to the relevant authorities. However, I am of the opinion that the removal of the IGP is not the solution.”
He said if the intelligence mechanism had been better equipped and streamlined, these attacks could have been averted.
“After the war ended, I was really concerned about strengthening the intelligence service in the country in a more effective manner. However, I was not allowed to do so,” the MP said and added that the particular terrorist organization that had carried out the attacks in Sri Lanka might consist of at least 200 members. Seems a lot of the ministers security have known about the attack but no one has told the ministers. Maybe the issue then is the ministers, sack the whole bunch

err, the previous government was taken to task saying that it is too strict on security. Now saying they didn't do enough.
Lara Tuesday, 23 April 2019 07:40 PM
To be fair the previous government was taken to task for claiming that there was islam extremism in the country. They claimed that they were propagating racism to get the sinhala voters.
Jiff Tuesday, 23 April 2019 07:41 PM
So you ended the war on your own but could not strengthen the intelligence on your own? sound like believable.
Buwa Tuesday, 23 April 2019 07:42 PM
You were used as a shield when this government went after the intelligence network. Please distance yourself from this govt and resign.

The only Minister with a backbone, not trying to palm off blame on one single poor official. This is real leadership.

It is said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has said “To forgive the terrorists is up to God, to send them to him is up to me.”
We also have leaders like him but they are victims of party politics.

I bet if the perpetrators were caught at an early stage and the blasts were averted, there will be many MP's claiming credit for their level of intelligence and advance preventive measures they took personally to safeguard the lives of many. Since it is NOT the case here, all of their security personnel were thoroughly made aware of the thereat, but the minister was not notified or made aware of the imminent danger. All bullshit WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AS AN ELECTED OFFICIAL ??
Sen Tuesday, 23 April 2019 08:11 PM

These muslim extremists are under the wings of their
brotherhood politicians in Sri Lanka. What can IGP
do. How can an organisation from a minority
community prevail without knowing to the Muslim
Chamila Mapitigama Tuesday, 23 April 2019 08:25 PM
Was the attack informed since 2010?- really unfortunate that ministers such as yourself SF, were unaware of it. Putting the blame on the previous government would not bring any credit to you but shame for not accepting your irresponsibility, arrogance and ignorance.
This is an epic result of the present government’s failure. The only parties to blame is the present government and the IGP - this fact is crystal clear to everyone.
