All schools in the Western Province (WP) will re-open on February 15 with the approval from Health Services Director General, Education Minister G.L Pieris today announced.
Accordingly, 412 schools out of 492 in the Western province (WP) will reopen on February 15.
The remaining 80 schools will be opened on March 15 with the commencement of the new schools term, he said.
"During the past five days, the Regional Coordinating Committees gave their recommendations on the opening of schools in the WP. Those recommendations have been sent to the Health Sevices Director-General for necessary approval," Minister Pieris said.
"There are 13 Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Colombo District. The number of schools which can reopen on February 15 are as follows: 73 schools out of 76 in Colombo Central and North, 54 schools in Thimbirigasyaya, 29 schools out of 31 in Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte, 19 schools in Kolonnawa, 17 schools out of 49 in Kaduwela, 39 schools in Homagama, 11 schools out of 26 in Padukka, 55 schools in Kesbewa, 7 schools out of 32 in Maharagama, 15 schools in Dehiwela, 24 schools out of 27 in Ratmalana, 28 schools in Moratuwa and 41 schools in Seethawaka," the Minister said.
Accordingly, schools in seven Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Colombo District will be able to open on February 15.
Prof. Pieris said special attention has been drawn on conducting the GCE Ordinary Level Examinations from March 1 to 11. After the examinations, schools with all grades in the country will open for students, he added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Education is important but lives are more important and one must first live to get an education. Most school children travel by public transport and since the pandemic has affected many people's jobs, most cannot afford even a school van. Please, Honourable Minister, re-consider this decision, given the fact that more than 500 cases a day are still detected and an average of 7 deaths occur daily! Please reopen schools in the western province in April, after Avurudu. At least, please wait until Ordinary Level examinations are done with. If COVID or its variants start to spread in schools...I cannot even imagine what will happen!!! Is there even any point in saying that someone will take responsibility!!

At a time where the number of cases are surging beyond any control, the authorities, in all their insolence, are endeavouring to open schools. It is up to the parents now to decided whether to expose their children to this virus or not. The authorities simply do not care any longer.
