Two containers full of refuse tea valued at Rs. 3.5 million had been raided today at the Colombo Port, Customs Additional Director General and Media Spokesman Sunil Jayaratne said.
Speaking to the media, he said the two containers were to be exported to Iraq via Jebel Ali Port on November 20.
The raid was conducted by the Customs Risk Management Unit, he said.
“During the raid, the customs officers managed to find 37,500 kilograms of refuse tea packed in the two forty-foot containers,” he said.
The refuse tea stocks were declared as coir to Customs.
The consignment was registered under a business registration in Kandy, Mr Jayaratne added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

There is no such thing called refuse tea. These are stems of the tea leaf which could makes good strong tea when made with samovars. In Russia and Middle east they wash the tea with boiling water and steep in samovar for more than an hour. This is such a waste of opportunity and money throwing away this tea.
