President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today ordered the relevant officials to take measures to immediately stop Oil Palm (Katu Pol) cultivation in the country, the President's Media Division said.

He made the order after the people of Galle complained that Katu Pol cultivation was one of the main reasons for the water scarcity.

President Rajapaksa, who was presiding the Galle District Coordinating Committee meeting, said a proper environmental study should be carried out immediately over the issue.

Though the cultivation generated a large income, he said the it should be stopped immediately if it affects the environment. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

A wise decision. In the meantime please se whether the Plantations Monitoring Unit is still in existence established with the formation of the Regional Plantation Companies in 1992.I am querying due to the most furtile lands being abandoned and release productive lands for mere purposes. The Land Reform Commission should scrutinize these things very carefully as these entire lands belong to them and have a proper census of acreage.

Like the darkness that creep in the night, these companies have entered the country stealthily from 1992. Do they contribute to the deforestation plight in Sri Lanka? Alarming situation!

Very commendable decision. Oil Palm cultivation across the World has done irreparable harm to the environment. Eg, the Destruction of Pygmy Elephants in Borneo. Good that HE has decided that we will NOT trade our World for a few Ruppees that would fatten these unscrupulous Companies

A good decision, but after the 19th amendment, does the President have the power to ban cultivation of a particular crop? A cabinet decision might be required.
