Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in a letter addressed to State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake has called for an explanation from him on the controversial statements he had made on Buddhist monks, before July 20, 2019.

Prime Minister had also mentioned in his letter that neither he nor the UNP endorses the remarks made by Mr. Ramanayake.

“My family and I have always associated with leading temples in the country such as Gangaramaya and Kelani Raja Maha Vihara. We have also assisted the monks in numerous ways. Therefore, I cannot endorse what you have mentioned regarding the monks” he said.

“I would like you to send in an explanation on your statement before July 20 this year," Mr Wickremesinghe said in his letter to the State Minister.

The media reported that the State Minister had made a statement saying 90 percent of the monks who shout for blood are ones who have been abused by the chief monks of the temples they reside in.

Mr Ramanayake, when contacted by the Daily Mirror, said there are only a handful of monks who shout for blood and that 90 percent of these monks are abused by the chief monks. “Therefore what I meant was that handful of monks are being abused by the chief monks,” he said. (Yohan Perera)

Ranjan is telling the truth.in the catholic church it is not different.

In the US the catholic church and other religious organizations are rife with physical, sexual and financial abuse. I’ve always wondered if the churches, temples, and mosques here have had these issues. It wouldn’t surprise me if there are many unreported cases.

    dave Tuesday, 16 July 2019 03:13 AM

you poof we have been asking you to explain yourself for almost 4 years now. go suck a cock you bastard

    Daham Tuesday, 16 July 2019 03:33 AM

Prime minister is trying to please the Buddhists to get their votes. There is nothing wrong in what Ranjan has said. Even Ranil knows what is happening in churches and temples but he does not admit it as he is a typical politician who has no conscience .

    Tony Tuesday, 16 July 2019 03:34 AM

How will anybody understand if Ranil (PM ) needd explaining.

Christopher De Silva Tuesday, 16 July 2019 04:56 AM

If not???? You are just trying to score points.

    Nelum Tuesday, 16 July 2019 05:17 AM

What has Ranjan done. "Telling the truth" . Why have you called for an explanation?

    Oshin Tuesday, 16 July 2019 05:20 AM

Oh PM! Aren't you really aware of the things happening in these places?

    King Tuesday, 16 July 2019 05:41 AM

The public and people like Ranjan have no freedom of speech. All other parliamentarians, the media and monks can say what they want and get away with it. That includes hate speech against other races and religions. Some can't handle the truth.

What else can you expect from atta pass

    Sambo Tuesday, 16 July 2019 07:14 AM

I think Ranjan is right in some way, as no one wants to speak up. The clergy is fast loosing respect by getting involved in these ugly politics instead of sticking to their worship and temples.

It is time someone in authority calls a spade a spade. Majority of Buddhist monks are thugs in saffron robes. They don't follow Buddhist principles of Maitreya and non-violence towards all forms of lives, including humans.

    Kalu Tuesday, 16 July 2019 01:37 PM

There is a allegation and now you have to ask from him who are those monks known to him who did these and arrest them, them call for witness through media. Sri Lankan style.
