New Democratic Front (NDF) presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa, who has been named as the new Leader of Opposition, yesterday said he would not support the implementation of the proposed Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement with the USA but would only support the abolition of it.
“We will provide a two-thirds majority for the government to tear the MCC agreement into pieces as that was the pledge given by the present government during the presidential election,” Mr. Premadasa said while speaking to UNP activists in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte yesterday.
“I intend to lead the opposition as a progressive force and therefore will see to it that it supports all good things which the present government does. Therefore we will support the government to implement all that is stated in its manifesto. The government wants a two-third majority to abolish the 19th Amendment to the constitution but we will support it to implement all other pledges it made through the election manifesto leaving the abolition of this piece of the legislation aside,” he added.
