The Tri Nikayika Tharuna Bikkhu Sangamaya - an organisation of young Buddhist monks representing the three chapters yesterday handed over a petition to the UNP leadership requesting the party not to give nominations to those MPs who had insulted Buddhist monks.

Convener of the organisation Ven. Kotahene Narada Thera told journalists that they decided to come to the UNP headquarters to make this request from the UNP leadership.

“We have requested the UNP leadership not to give nominations to MPs Mangala Samaraweera, Ranjan Ramanayake and Rajitha Senaratne who had insulted monks. We also request the UNP leadership not to give nominations to Dr Senaratne who had spoken on behalf of a lady who is working for the Swiss Embassy in Colombo” the Thera said.

He noted that UNP Candidate Sajith Premadasa also did not bother to condemn the insults made against monks during the Presidential election.

“Mr Premadasa only issued the statement on Swiss Embassay incident,” he said. (Yohan Perera)

Buddhist monks not above the law. People criticize if what you are doing is not right. Look inwards and correct yourselves.

    Sarath Friday, 06 December 2019 10:48 AM

And what action will the venerable sangha take against monks who , by their conduct, bring Buddhism into disrepute?

    Wijebahu Friday, 06 December 2019 10:52 AM

Just a robe is not a monk. most of the monks in Sri Lanka are just robes. so before complaining behave to earn the respect. you cannot demand it. Buddha has clearly mentioned this in Dhammapadha.

During the last elections places for religious activity was transformed into political office and business institutions. Too little and too late.

    Citizen Friday, 06 December 2019 10:59 AM

By the time these monks correct the politicians, there won't be Buddhism in SL.. Why can't they lookafter their congregation rather than allowing them to seek other religions.

    Buddhist Friday, 06 December 2019 10:59 AM

One has to earn the respect and not demand. Same applies to Buddhist monks.

Concerned Buddhist Friday, 06 December 2019 11:02 AM

So much for that thing called compassion that the Buddha taught! Monks are supposed to forgive, not demand respect! The first thing you let go of as a monk should be your ego. That’s why you take robes and shave your heads. These monks have no idea of what the Buddha taught. It is concerning because people listen to them!

    Rajan Friday, 06 December 2019 11:05 AM

So a country can move forward with a religious doctrine? Please get a life and leave th poor people alone. They have suffered enough while you go driving in luxury cars you get as gifts.. this is not Buddhism or any other religion.

    Kusal Friday, 06 December 2019 12:04 PM

Who is ruling the country today, the government or the monks. If the monks dictate terms they should run the country.

Sampath Hewawasam Friday, 06 December 2019 12:43 PM

What Monks should do is face the accusations and clear themselves. Load Buddha never stopped anyone criticizing him. instead he faced them and proved they are wrong. Some of those who criticized became followers of Buddha. Let people decide who they want to send to parliament.

    Devanampiyatissa Friday, 06 December 2019 12:52 PM

Some monks are only outwardly monks because they wear the saffron robe but their conduct is far from the teachings of the great Lord Buddha.

    Vijay Friday, 06 December 2019 04:49 PM

It is sad to see so much of political decisions are being made by Buddist Bikkus who should leave politics to politicians and go to people and teach buddhas message. Hope Gota will wean all religious leaders are weaned from politics

    rew Friday, 06 December 2019 05:15 PM
