Lanka not informed of Sri Lankans beheading in Saudi Arabia

By Sumaiya Rizvi

The beheading of a female and male Sri Lankan who were found guilty for committing theft and murder had been done in secret while five other Sri Lankans involved in the incident were sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Saudi government, Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau Chairman Kingsley Ranawaka said yesterday.

“Our appeals for them had failed and they were sentenced a year ago for a crime committed in 2006. We were not informed of the date of execution and the Saudi law does not allow it while they also do not release the bodies of the dead,” Ranawaka said.

According to Ranawaka both male and female victims had been migrant workers. While the latter had later married an Indian who was also beheaded along with them, they left behind two children, he said.

“The SLFEB intervened and brought down the children to live under the guardianship of their grandmother,” Ranawaka said. The female victim has had two children in her previous marriage in Sri Lanka and those children too were living with their grandmother. The SLFEB had sponsored her mother who had visited her in Prison prior to her beheading, he said.

Meanwhile Ranawaka said that the appeal was still proceeding in the case of an underage domestic worker Rizana who was alleged to have killed a baby.

I wish the information below would reach concerned parties and the public. All this information has been obtained, first-hand: 1. Any foreigner once taken into custody by Saudi Security will, within a week's time, be informed to the Sri Lankan Embassy/consulate in Riyadh or Jeddah. Information of inmates is so received but, most probably, is not followed-up, with the relevant Saudi Authorities, due to various reasons such as lack of staff, facilities, etc. 2. Most of the S.L. inmates, in Saudi Prisons, are by and large notorious. They are often found to be habitual-offneders. 3. The cases of those who are convicted, remian open for appeal, but nothing is done by S.L. diplomats. So if any one says that beheading is done in 'total-darkness' it is completely false, and cannot be accepted, under any circumstance! 3. The important fact everybody ignores is that crucial responsibity lies with the S.L.B.F.E., to educate Sri Lankans, on all legal aspects, before they proceed to the middle east for employment! Trying to find fault with Saudi Authorities, at this last stage, is nothing but a political maneuver!

This was done in public. There was no 'hide and seek' here. How will the Consul General not be aware? He should be removed immediatley! Is the foreign ministry sleeping? Act now and remove him, he is vastly unpopular over here!

Saudi Arabia is the modern babarian, of the holyland! I have been there, as a domestic-driver, and have wthnessed much incest and adultery, taking place!

Three cold blooded murderes who deprived the life of an innocnet woman just for money have been eliminated. Why all the fuss? Why talk about the Saudi goverment, that country,S.L.B.F.E., etc. The murders had been Muslims in the first place and they would have been definitely well aware of the rules of Saudi Arabia and the consequences. The only place they erred was they thought they could away by doing these things like in Sri Lanka. They also would have thought that the Saudi police would be as inefficient as the Sri Lanka Police and not trace the perpetrators.

I have never heard a Saudi Man is been accused or convicted for any wrong doing for their servants (Employees) It is really surprising to see they are saints on any issue and there had been no power yet to question them. They get down women as domestic aids on paper but once they go it’s the end of their life. They are the worst womanizers in the world. They are protected by their law. It’s high time for the world community to rise against these barbarians.

PUNISHMENTS NEED FOR CRIMES.BUT SOUDI ARABIA DOESNT HAVE IMPARTIAL LEAGAL SYSTEM,IT'S A JUNGLE JUSTICE SYSTEM.OUNTRY HAS MODERN ROADS AND BUILDINGS,AND MONEY,BUT NOT IMPROVED THE FAIRNESSNESS AND JUSTICE.THEIR HABITS ARE NOT CHANGING AT ALL WITH HIGH EDUCATION FROM WESTERN COUNTRIES.OTHER MATTER IS SRI LANKA IS TREATED AS PIECE OF GARBAGE BY THESE ARABIC COUNTRIES,EVEN LANKAN GOVERNMENTS LICKING THEIR FOOTS DURING LAST 40 YEARS.NOW WITHOUT BE SILENCE,RAISE YOUR VOICESS TO SAVE RIZANA'S LIFE.

I am in Jeddah, we know about this matter then how come our authorities blame the Saudi Authorities? Because out missions are always busy with organisng parties. Also all the punishments are given in public place as a lesson for others.

Most of the comments here are against death sentence since the victims are not you guys, think from the victims point of view if the murdered is your mother or wife what will be your reaction? this is the 59th beheading in this year out of that 70% are Saudis So dont think this is only for migrant worker just because they are Sri Lankans, remember Saudi Arabia has the lowest crime records in the world compared to other part of the world. If we have the same in Sri Lanka we could have avoid last weeks Bambalapitiya incident murdering in public with no fear... what is the punishment going to be? Possible politician or Transfer with high rank???

We should not criticize a host country and its governing laws for the punishment it carried out on the criminals who committed a grave crime in the host country. Needless to mention that all the expatriates working in Saudi Arabia know about the strict laws and regulations that are being imposed in the host country and as responsible expatriates, they should be abide by the applicable laws and regulations. So, it is not right to blame the judiciary system of the host country for the deliberate crime committed by few individuals.

It is judicial killing: it would be against law (contempt of judiciary) and norm to dicuss here as barbaric and if there is no judicial killing then non-judicial killings will increase, air raids and encounters- 'killed while trying to escape'etc., One thing I can agree with commentators here: the govt. needn't allow Sri Lankans to go to Saudi if they consider the laws there, are discriminatory. Not only Saudi Arabia there are so many countries in Asia and in Africa consider execution necessary to keep crime rate minimum as it deters criminals. No need to seek other non-judicial means to justify that by means of cunning contract usu. by some powerful in the corridors of power using covert methods. It is not politically motivated killing either.

Faira, Holy prophet muhammad(PBUH) was descended in an arab county as Allah almighty knew, arabs were the worst people in those times so he could start his preachings from there to spread to the rest of the world.

Come on Naushard ! Your swift and harsh words tantamount to proving it is you who is neither popular with the Jeddah based Sri Lankan community nor the Consulate. The present Consul General is the most efficient and vastly admired one the Jeddah has so far seen for his creative thinkings and activities. It is with his initiation hitherto unknown appeal process on behalf of convicted Sri Lankans started, it is this C.G managed to get commuted the death penalty for another two for jail terms, if you want more it is he so humane to save a life of another Sri Lankan in death row by convincing a Saudi Philanthropist to pay the blood money on this Sri Lankan convict’s behalf. Check with rational minded Sri Lankan here or with his Ministry If you have any doubt. Come out of the pseudonym and the deep well you are in and join hands like us with the Consul General whoever he may be and let’s work for the mother Lanka and her people.

They must be the victims of nil or poor legal representation. Govt should consider setting up a mandatory legal insurance for all workers in the middle east.

Jiffry, what a nonsense you are talking about!. The question is will an accused receive a fair trail in Saudi Arabia. While you bluff the human rights organaisations like Amnesty International says NO. These poor peoples who can even understand the legal enviornment there are in, most likely to be the victims of unfair trails.

 Posted By: mathanamutha
Mr. Abdul Hassan: Yes, you are correct! The C.G. must be popular among the people who are safeguarding him (e.g. like you!) but, if you take the common-man, he is very unpopular: even with his own staff!

 Posted By: M.Naushard
Mr. Ranawaka, the SLBFE has done its best and the appeals were turned down. Please spare a thought for the poor children. However executions in Saudi are not done in secret but in public places so that it would be a deterrent for others. The Sri Lankan counsular offices in Saudi should have followed this up.- Ramzeel

We must tell Saudi A to listen to us ASAP.

I am not sure whether they commited a crime or not. But these people involved in the case were Sri Lankans who migrated to earn $ for better life. Those who are living in chilled rooms with taxpayers money as ambassadors should play active role to save our economic migrants.Behaeding even for a crime! Just imagine your hands tied and blindfolded and cold blade start to penetrate your neck?

I am a muslim and i have been to Saudi Arabia and lived in many part of the europe and australasia. Out of all the nationalities i found Arabs are the worst people on earth and they don't have any regards for other muslims or specially towards south asians. Arrogant, selfish and drunk with wealthiness. sometime i wonder how they came from the same land as our beloved prophet. thank godness i don't have to work in Middle East.

Don't pretend that you did not know about this case at all. This beheading is not a spontaneous act like the COPs drowning an innocent youth at the Bambalapitiya sea. Always these cases are referred to the Embassies of the origin of the offender.

Excellent Faira, we know that and it is nice to hear from a muslim, we also know that some people have no knowledge about Islam although they are muslims, i also beleive saudi is one of the worst places to live.

There is nothing one could do now, all three have been decapitated (their heads chopped off from their bodies) and within hours they bury them. Sometimes they later crucify and display the headless corpse for all to see as a lesson. Its gruesome experience which no civilized person wants to witness.

Saudi Arabia is a barbaric country full of extremist savages who don't care about the lives of south asians. But they know how to kneel down and lick the boots of their western masters anytime, anywhere. If a white was in the boots of those Sri Lankans, they would have let them go.

SLFEB is sleeping in comfort rooms in Colombo while only Amnesty International fought for these people and now after the people are beheaded they have woken up. At least now fight for the rights of others in the death row. It was stated my Amnesty International that the statements from these people were taken under threat and no lawyeres were allowed to represent them. Where were you SLFEB???

Saudi Arabia is country "Barbaric", It does everything to protect its Kingdom under the guise of a noble religion. Sri Lanka should should take steps to ban anyone seeking employment and other asian and european countries should follow suit. The UN has a noble duty to make a case to scrap barbaric laws of the countries. As we know saudi arabia is worst, worst, country in the world. I was in that country for 10years.

Well said Thomas. These people are now coming out with various excuses to protect their own skin. Everyone from top to bottom are either corrupt or disorganised so that they do not see what's happening around and after that lather the rest.First of all these people should be placed on chopper block for their faults.

Arabs are the worst people I have ever met. The arab students who used to study with me are the dumbest . Arrogent, selfish and proud of their dollars. Thankfully, In Australia they are kept at the right place and Australians are not hesitant to publicly crticize them as dumb and fanatics who commit any crime taking cover of allah.

You break the law, you deserve punishment. That is why the law exists in the first place. Therefore, do not blame SLBFE for the crimes committed by people just because they have gone to Saudi for employment. They should have behaved themselves!

 Posted By: anurajay
This is a typical example of our officials in the foreign missions sleeping on tax payers money. They are lethargy and give lame excuses and get away. NOT ANSWERABLE AT ALL

 Posted By: BASH
Nice Comments by all. You go to a country to work and earn. Then criticize them and their laws. commit crimes, murders, robberies and shout when the perpetrators are punished. It is this sort of punishment that keep that country and its people safe. If you do not like their laws and culture, why the hell do you go there in que. Ex Saudi worker

Death sentences are against Human Rights norms! There is no 'Rule of Law'(not even fair-trial) in Saudi. 'Redress,' a Human Rights Organisation, has published 4 Books on the sorry state of human rights in Saudi; including, how badly they treat their women! It is a shame that the Foreign Employment Bureau of Sri Lanka (and not the Foreign Ministry and our Embassy in Saudi) took-up their cases and arranged for 'legal-representation' (???). The S.L., Foreign Minister or his deputy, who himself is a Muslim, should have taken up their cause, at the highest level! They seem to be otherwise 'busy' when poor Sri Lankans, who earn the much-needed foreign exchange for the country - under very harsh conditions as house-maids and labourers, are left to be killed without proper legal-representation! I pray that at least our poor little Muslim sister, the house-maid from Muthur, sentenced to death in Saudi, will escape from being beheaded! All concerned governmental officials: Please save that girl from being beheaded!

Well, punishment is totally different from the usual ill-treatment, metted-out on Asians. I welcome the punishment, if the offences were truly committed by them; but I fear that innocents, are often, among those punished! Our government should do the needful to thoroughly investigate these incidents and take preventive measures; even consider withdrawing the workers!

Capital Punishment is needed to reduce crime in Sri lanka! This is a lawful process; not like 'white-vans,' etc.
