SLFP to help rectify anomalies

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) led by President Maitripala Sirisena has decided to look into the shortcomings that may arise in the demarcation of ‘electoral wards’ for conducting elections to the local authorities, party officials said yesterday.

The election to the local authorities will be conducted on a mix of the First Past the Post System and the Proportional Representation System according to a law enacted by the previous government. O the number of members two-thirds will be elected under the First Past the Post System while the rest will be elected under the Proportional Representation System.

SLFP Secretary Duminda Dissanayake told Daily Mirror the party had received several requests to rectify the anomalies that had arisen in demarcating the boundaries of wards.

The SLFP Central Committee has appointed a committee to recommend the revamping of the SLFP under the leadership of President Sirisena.

Mr. Dissanayake said this committee would look into all aspects including the appointment of electoral organizers and the modalities for contesting future elections.

When asked whether the SLFP would team up with the UNP for the elections to the local authorities, he said no such decision had been taken.

“The committee will meet after the party’s 64th anniversary on September 2,” he said.

This exercise should be done by all parties together. SLFP doing it alone is not good governance.
