Colombo Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil said yesterday that street vending would be allowed only on certain pavements in Pettah and nowhere else in the city.

“We have decided to allow street vending on certain pavements in Pettah, with the exception of 1st Cross Street. This is a temporary solution for the Ramazan season, and once we decide on a permanent solution they will be moved to other areas. Street vending will not be allowed anywhere else in the city,” he said.

He said that the decision to allow street hawkers on pavements again was reached because of political considerations.

“There was a lot of political interference in the decision to allow pavement hawking, because elections are coming up. Everybody wants to be the hero of the vendors, so I had to take that decision. But now everything has been sorted out,” he said.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, the mayor said that he did not take this decision for his own political advantage, and that such a rumour was spread as a politically motivated slander to discredit him. (Jehan Gunasekara)

Mayor it is very clear to the country that you are playing politics. Now that Gota is not their to guide you people can now see the difference between good governance and rubbish mayors. Anyway all the best.

The so called poor vendors were given an alternative location to make their living. The pavements are meant for pedestrians to walk safely. Lets come out from the third world country mentality and develop this country for the benefit of all citizens.

    adamsapple Wednesday, 24 June 2015 11:38 AM

UNP is after the votes... not the development of the country...

    Anyan Wednesday, 24 June 2015 11:10 AM

At this point we have to make impartial decision. It is true that hawkers are disturbing the pavements but at the same time poor they also have to survive. Most of the guys commented here looking this issue in a communal mind criticising the mayor. At the same time praising Gota. Gota ordered to clear the street vendors to attain political benefits but did he solve the problems of the poor people except playing out billions of money from the urban development projects?

Mr. Mayor must allowing this to ensure he has funding for his Casino jaunts at night.

Prem Nath Wednesday, 24 June 2015 10:32 AM

Mr.Mayor, the hawkers were given specified areas with builtstalls to vendor their goods by the previous government, who really cleaned up the city and made it a beautiful capital every one was proud of.UNP has done nothing good so far, only reversing the standard of Sri Lanka to spite the previous regime.

    Anil Wednesday, 24 June 2015 10:17 AM

    Rasheed Wednesday, 24 June 2015 10:14 AM

    modaya Wednesday, 24 June 2015 09:34 AM

We the people CBO salute Gota what he did to beautify the city of Colombo. The current mayor is communal minded trader I warn there will be riot on CBO against the muslims by Singhalese and Tamils.Colombo is not Pakistan or India.

Samantha Perera Wednesday, 24 June 2015 06:12 AM

Please bring on pavement hawking and on the spot urination as we will have to fit into Tamilnadu. Culture very soon with this government.

Donald Duck Wednesday, 24 June 2015 09:13 AM

Please ... we need all these plus all things like Tamil Nadu and most parts of India. At least go back to pre-2005 so that people had the freedom to do anything on the streets including urinating and smoking in public. GR took all those rights away from us.

    Dilipa Wednesday, 24 June 2015 09:09 AM

Dear Mt Mayor,So you want to be a hero before anyone elase?. do these vendors pay Tax as the rest of the people and the shops that use the pavements? You are thinking from your back side!No wonder MR gathering the support....
