With the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) led by Ven. Maduluwave Sobitha Thera urging the enactment of electoral reforms, President Maithripala Sirisena will hold a special meeting tomorrow with representatives of this group to discuss the way froward.

The NMSJ and some other civil society groups had earlier requested both the President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to enact the electoral reforms through the 20th Amendment to the Constitution before dissolving parliament.

The United National Party (UNP) wants parliament dissolved and and fresh elections conducted. However, there are groups from inside and outside the government urging the enactment of electoral reforms before such a move. The President has also worked out a concept paper in this regard proposing to increase the number of MPs to 255. (Kelum Bandara)

Whatever the promises made to the voters before the last presidential elections must be fulfilled before going for the general election.

Not only 20th amedment should be passed, but also coming election should be contested under this. If it is not passed under minor rivalries, some hardened democrats would die as there would not be any opportunity in future for a change.

The present number of MPs is ideal as the Public cannot bear the cost of 225, also. Study the JVP campaigns, which is very fair by all their candidates. No battle for preferences.

Minority parties will never allow the electoral system to be changed. Imaging the situation if the executive presidency was abolished while electoral reforms were not done?

    Mason Wednesday, 03 June 2015 11:01 AM

It is either Electoral Reforms or No Confidence Motions. President wants Electoral Reforms, his party SLFP wants both and UNP who brought in the new President are not interested in both. The People are watching the Drama and slowly but surely losing confidence in all the Political players. In the meanwhile the Country is drifting without direction.

why does a small country like ours need even 225 MPs with another 300 or so provincial councilor please abolish the provincial councils in the south and have only 2 Provincial councils in the North and in the east that also with 10 members in each and do not increase the number of MPs

Sri Wickrama Wednesday, 03 June 2015 11:42 AM

Now the utmost priority is dissolution of parliament. No agreement or consensus cannot be reached at this moment. Most people will not agree to increase MPs to 255 or more. Because we have more than enough Members for PS and PC.

Hey, poor voters, never trust politicians ! They all are the same, except the colours are different !! Sri Lanka needs statesman type genuine leaders. Frankly speaking none of our leaders have reached that goal due to power hungry, hatred based attitudes. But hope such leaders will emerge ( from any party) to save and unite a Lanka for all.
