Institute of Directors organises ‘Saying No To Corruption’ forum

The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) has organised another Power Evening, a public forum, captioned ‘Saying No to Corruption! Can Corporates Draw The Fine Line?” on June 9, 2015 at The Kings Court, Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo.
The forum will have Ambassador and Head of European Union Delegation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives David Daly as the keynote speaker and former Central Bank of Sri Lanka Assistant Governor Dr. Anila Dias Bandaranaike, John Keells Holdings PLC Group Finance Director Ronnie Peiris and Transparency International Sri Lanka Group Director J.C. Weliamuna. It will be moderated by LIRNasia Founding Chair and Economist Dr. Rohan Samarajiva.
The forum will address the real issues and the experts will voice their thoughts on how the corporate community should make their voices heard to say “No” to corruption.
With freedom of media comes the detailed media coverage of the corruption and abuse of power deep rooted in society. The recent disclosures in the media make it incumbent on all corporates and their boards of directors in particular to take meaningful steps in their sphere of influence to support and actively participate in the eradication of corruption.
The ills of corruption are well known. Corruption distorts markets and creates unequal playing fields. It results in sub optimal use of a country’s resources - including tax payer’s monies. It is opportune to question whether the business sector is in fact aiding its continuity. What are the measures corporates can reasonably take to eradicate corruption? Would reducing discretion be the way forward? What is the balance between removing opportunities for corruption and slowing down decision-making? Should there be self-regulation by individuals, corporates and public officials? How difficult is it to tread the fine line and face the consequences?
