A baby elephant allegedly kept by Magistrate Thilina Gamage without proper documents had been handed over to the Wild Life Conservation Department at Battaramulla this evening, Director General of the department H.D. Ratnayake said.

He said an investigation had already been launched by the CID to look into this incident and others where elephants were kept illegally.

“The original owner of the elephant is someone else and no proper paperwork had been done when transferring the ownership of the animal,” he said adding that the department would take further action on the matter in future. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Anyone including judges can make mistake as human beings. When officials in top ranks make mistakes, it is a big news for others. However, please do not expect 100% clean judiciary in a society where all other institutions are corrupted.

Magistrate Thilina Gamage has more explanation to do keeping a baby elephant as a pet. A magistrates income as monthly salary could not afford to maintain an elephant as a pet. Could be that the elephant was to be trained to perform acts to attract tourists and to make an income out of the baby elephant. However, while there is an outcry to release baby elephants, this magistrate continued to keep the elephant without surrendering the animal to the appropriate authority. He should be indicted for holding a baby elephant with falsified registration papers.
