No secret accounts in any foreign bank-MR

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today rejected allegations that he, his wife or sons maintained illegal or secret offshore accounts in any foreign bank.

The public should note that these rumours are being spread by the same individuals who said that helicopters had been purchased for the use of my sons and that horses had been bought for them from ‘Buckingham palace in America’. I would like to categorically state for the information of the public that neither I, my wife nor my sons maintain any illegal or secret offshore accounts in any foreign bank,” the former President said in a statement.

The full statement ;

Prominent members of the government have been spreading rumours about billions of Dollars stashed abroad in secret offshore accounts by me, my wife and sons.

The allegation is refreshed from time to time through strategically placed media reports about American and Indian financial intelligence bodies joining in the search and special teams being sent to the Seychelles to look for the hidden money. Some weeks ago, the cabinet spokesman had told Reuters that a member of a ‘leading family’ had $1064 million in a secret account in Dubai. Recently, a government VVIP had even told a group of parliamentarians about these supposed secret bank accounts in order to prejudice them against me.

This unfounded allegation is being used as a convenient tool by my political opponents. Those familiar with the world of high finance will know that in this era of heightened surveillance due to concerns over money laundering and terrorist funding, accounts with millions of Dollars cannot be operated without attracting the attention of international regulatory authorities. If any such accounts existed, it is certainly not going to take this long to reveal their details.

The public should note that these rumours are being spread by the same individuals who said that helicopters had been purchased for the use of my sons and that horses had been bought for them from ‘Buckingham palace in America’. I would like to categorically state for the information of the public that neither I, my wife nor my sons maintain any illegal or secret offshore accounts in any foreign bank.”

    Everytime he does not. Give a press release and deny all the allegations. How easy. Sri Lankan people are mad to believe him?

    Bala Sunday, 19 April 2015 04:27 PM

    Oh yes we believe you unless proven otherwise. Good Luck. But you cannot wash away the use of state funds for your election campaign and abuse of state machinery including state media and buses without payment.

    We, citizens of this country, are naturally concerned about the large costs in various construction projects and wonder what happened to all extra money. Now, MR has stated his position and wait and see the true position.

    MR not only finished the war, did lot of developments to the country. Yes there were flaws in the system but the country was improving day by day. Now you can clearly see the present government struggling to rule the country and only way they could survive is by slinging mud at MR. people will soon realize the truth.

    Lies and accusation against the previous regime was what the new regime breed on because there is no solution to run the country. Ditching and witch hunt is not working. Joke of shooting has backfired. What next!!!!

    The usual humbug by the corrupt family who took the whole country for a right royal ride on the pretext of being super patriots. Of course, that is those are called "secret accounts". Time will tell and expose the real looters soon.
