A Mihin Lanka flight landed safely at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) upon being forced to return when pilots detected a technical problem en route to Dhaka, Bangladesh today.

The Mihin Lanka flight MRL501 along with 159 passengers and 7 flight crew had departed BIA at 9.30 am though it was scheduled to take off at 7.25 am.

After takeoff, the pilots had detected a defect in the technological system and decided to return to the BIA. It grounded at 10.20 am, the Head of Mihin Lanka Commercials, Rohan Perera said.

When asked the reason for the delay of the departure of the flight MRL501, the BIA officials said it was not a technological fault but some changes of the flight crew.

Mr. Perera said that the exact nature of the technical issue is not yet known and added the authorities are inspecting the aircraft to determine the technical fault.

He added that the passengers were given accommodation with all facilities. (Piyumi Fonseka and Deepa Adikari)

If you can’t buy brand new air planes for your fleet, which means you are playing with lives of your pilots, crew and passengers. This is the simple truth, which should be holy for government run enterprises.

I fly this MJ 501 every week and this is very old flight. may be not Flight-worthy. I think they new the exact technical issue since flight was grounded last thursday instead they have sent a sri lankan air line flight to and Friday it was delay for 2 hours and it is a different flight from Mihin the time it was landed I have seen that MJ501 was under repair near the control tower. Mihin is putting all the passengers and pilots and fights crew life in risk every day. we so fortunate have few of best pilots under Mihin lanka putting their life on risk. I think it time to ground Mihin long haul flights if we can not replace them with new fights or let sri lankan air line to fly the long haul sectors.

    Great pilot.

    lakshman Monday, 30 March 2015 07:57 AM

In these modern Aircraft it is not that difficult to know the exact issue and Pilots should have indicated the reason for return as well

Horri Jimonis Monday, 30 March 2015 04:51 AM

Mihin Lanka = Mahinda Rajapakshe. Both should be abolished and put into garbage or dump yard.

Bubble Banda Monday, 30 March 2015 04:49 AM

Mihin Lanka should be closed and sealed. Public cannot take risk and travel by a cheap, 3rd class rotten service.

Desmond Jeromme Monday, 30 March 2015 04:46 AM

All what MR initiated are bogus and zero profit for the nation but to fill his pockets to run a luxury life with his family. This is a good example of Mihin Lanka, reject all these "Kadicha Bus Service" as we rejected MR.

If the flight was to leave at 7.30 am whadid it not leave at the schedule time.Problem seems to lie in the reason that made a late departure. The pilot should explain why he came back to Colombo instead of landing at the nearest airport. These guys are a danger to air traffic and he should be sent home forthwith

    saman Monday, 30 March 2015 01:29 AM

Dear de silva, pl. read the article properly.. the plane had taken off at 9.30 not 7.25 as you have mentioned. then had returned after 50 minutes. that means the plane could have not even crossed the Sri Lankan tertiary...

Lanka Watch Monday, 30 March 2015 01:21 AM

This your Capt, speaking. It all depended on the nature of the technical defect the pilot noticed and it must have not been a serious one that necessitated immediate landing and the Capt. made a wise decision to return to base and not to land at the closest airport as if he proceeded to Dhaka he would have had to ground the aircraft in Dhaka, which meant heavy expenses of flying the AOG spares, crew change, and handling charges etc, all in foreign currency.. The Capt.. should be complimented and not punished for his wise action..

    SHYAM Monday, 30 March 2015 12:41 AM

I really doubt the quality of readers out here, it clearly says the flight departed at 9.30AM and returned at 10.20AM so what bloody fuss?? Anyhow we should commend the Pilots for this not the Airlines.

Why did pilots risk the life of 159 passengers and 7 crew flying all the way back, that like almost landing in Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Thailand or even Delhi, what if disaster struck? They are all lucky to be alive... Is this a case of pilots trying to commit suicide? why couldn't he fly to the closest airport seeking help? REVOKE his license and send him off...

    Dee Sunday, 29 March 2015 11:47 PM

    Read properly please.

    dharma Sunday, 29 March 2015 11:28 PM

srilanka flight name must change forthwith,,it was a discrased to srilanka, the authorities must change the name. it was undermine srilanka

Prem Nath Sunday, 29 March 2015 09:37 PM

Mihin Lanka is famous for this. On several occasions flight does not take off for hours due the infamous "Oil Leak" which takes hours to detect and fix.

    asiri Sunday, 29 March 2015 09:00 PM

I was on a flight from Jakarta on the 1st of March which landed in Colombo and the Mihin aircraft came to a complete halt on the runway and had to be towed to the holding area after waiting on the runway for approximately 30mts. No explanation given other than the Pilot saying we have landed safely. The government and aviation authorities must check the safety of the aircraft before anything catastrophic happens.

    arash Sunday, 29 March 2015 08:38 PM

Dear retard, according to this article flight departured at 9.30. U idiot.

    sisira Sunday, 29 March 2015 07:01 PM

They have returned in 50 minutes means the had a Dhaka Bound journey only for Just 20-25 minutes. That moment they would have been above Jaffna. Therefore. Returning to Colombo is the most appropriate action as the pilots can use Palali, Trinco, Hingurakgoda or any other suitable airport for an emmergency landing if needed. If somebody say that pilot is wrong he should learn geography of Sri Lanka first of all..

    Ifam Sunday, 29 March 2015 06:09 PM

During the past 15 month there were 29 plane crashes reported all around the world. Clever pilots have saved the lives of the passengers and crew. all credits goes to pilots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I traveled by this same flight about 3 weeks ago to Dhaka and from Dhaka same. From the moment it took off from BIA I was gripped with fear and uncertainty with unusual sounds. The seat setting were awkward, there is no leg space at all. Look they have removed seats and added more. No sufficient toilet facilities. I think these are discarded flights somewhere, and MIHIN has cheaply purchased them. Ground them all for safety of life.

Upul Gunawardena Sunday, 29 March 2015 05:38 PM

Looks like some people comment before reading the entire article. Please read the article before you comment:"departed BIA at 9.30 am though it was scheduled to take off at 7.25 am."Landed back in Colombo at 10.20AM. This means it was in the air only for 50 minutes and 25 minutes away from Colombo.

de silva Sunday, 29 March 2015 03:07 PM

Depart at 7.25 and landed at 10.20 am.Landed where ,again in BIA.they did not find any other airport to land or who requested the Pilot to return to BIA .If they encountered the problem midair they had several other air ports.Did they missed a passenger or was there a technical problem .Mihin lanka should answer.Otherwise the to be passengers will think twice about ML.

    Krish Sunday, 29 March 2015 02:53 PM

@ Fair N Square: You are absolutely right, But correction of this news should be the flight was able to take off only at 9.30 although it was scheduled at 7.30. So it has landed back within 50 Mins of flying time. Choice would have been returning to Colombo or landing in Chennai. I guess Chennai is not close while en route to Dhaka.

Kamalika Wadood Sunday, 29 March 2015 02:53 PM

Efficient and clever Pilots of mother Lanka. Detecting the fault and landing safely with responsibility. Great job guys.

    hrm Sunday, 29 March 2015 02:51 PM

What a retard are you? Do you even know at which length they encountered the problem? Did this article mention that they were so close to Dhaka and the plane came all the way back?? REVOKE license of a Pilot? Lol do come to your senses this is not road traffic.
