Lord Buddha was kind to animals and never in his time did priests or temples own elephants. Surely we can have peraheras without elephants being harassed and made to do things nature never intended for them - it is unkind. Let us be compassionate to these majestic animals as the Lord Buddha, the Compassionate One preached.

Wild animals in captive including elephants is absolute cruel practice whether for religious ceremonies in Buddhist temples, as pets or for performances as entertainment. If Buddha is alive today he would be the first to denounce not even wild animals, the elephants in captivity for religious activities, but against to decorate temples with their body parts, elephant tusks. Elephants are wild animals and sometimes there are reports from different parts of the word how elephants loose their temper and attack people including their keepers out of frustration and anger for denying their freedom and torture by the keepers. Elephants need freedom to move round freely walk least few miles in their habitat with their own herd looking for food. They are highly social animals and international research and studies of wild elephants have found them to have disciplined life style much better than of ours.

Nothing can be more important than the life and freedom of any animal. The so-called veneration of Buddha and Buddhism through forceful decoration and parading of elephants in peraheras is an outright cruelty and disregard for their happiness. Even tourists will accommodate peraheras without (chained) elephants over time.
