A very wise move to have a civilian as the Secretary of Defence. This would prevent interference into the administration of the services and interintra services rivalries. via DM Android App

No Sri, that is not an important factor. THAT is the job of the defense forces. The Secretary of Defense should be -and always is-. a civil servant.

Get General Fonseka in double quick time. Put him in charge of Army, Air-Force, and Navy. And also the Department of Police and The Security of all Air Ports. And the Ministery of Agriculture.

The political problem is Sarath is not a politician and do not have a political power base and he is not even an MP. So the hardcore politicians would not promote him but to give him what was taken away from him. Importantly he will not be suitable for defense as he has some issues to settle , which will go against the policy of the new government

Basnayake is a good selection. All secretaries should be SLAS Officers. They are for administrative purposes. Not to command the forces. Minister of defense or Deputy minister of defense would do that. Earlier regime used GR as deputy minister.

From all attributes leader should be honest. He is the secretary not the chief of Commander. I remember Bandusena. All the best to you. Gun is for defense and not use on own people.

Now comes the purge of the military which was under UNHRC investigations for Human rights violations under Rajapakse. So will there be a purge of the Buddhist Sanga, the Sinhalese nationalists, the police, the SIS, the business community with links to the Rajapakse government and the media

This position is supposed to held by a person with military exposure. Especially in a country just recovering from a 30 odd years of war and the name LTTE is not totally wiped out from encyclopedia. Does M.R.Dissanayake hold such grounds? We all like to have civilians in such positions, but before that we should know we are in the right time for that ...
