Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, who recently returned to the country from an overseas stay, is playing a ‘pivotal role’ in working out a common agenda to bring forward a candidate acceptable to all the parties in the opposition, Daily Mirror.

However, it was not clear whether she would contest proposed snap presidential election as the common candidate or not. The parties in the opposition are busy with preparations for working out a common agenda for the election. It is learnt that the idea for a common candidate is gaining ground at the moment despite differences within some of the parties.

Meanwhile, as part of this exercise to bring about common understating in the opposition, Ven. Maduluwave Sobhitha Thera who spearheads the National Movement for Social Justice will have separate meetings with the representatives of the opposition parties today, including those from the United National Party (UNP).

These meetings will take place throughout the day today at his Temple in Kotte.

It is learnt that some members of Sri Lanka Freedom Party, distraught with the government, are planning to join hands with the opposition if an acceptable candidate is fielded for this election to oppose President Mahinda Rajapaksa. (Kelum Bandara)

It is a good idea given the circumstances that UNP always has a traditional voters base of 40% and to increase it to at least 51% they require the support of the people supporting the other parties. It would be possible by fielding a candidate supported by all opposition parties.Especially the support of MS Kumaratunga will bring in most of the SLFP supporters of aged population.

The common candidate has to be a person acceptable to all the parties and all the minorities. If Chandrika becomes the common candidate with the support of the UNP she can gain 20% of SLFP votes and she will win the election. But she must leave the job after abolishing the executive presidency within a very brief period.

The very constitution was framed and established by the same guys who says it should be abolished. When they introduced the constitution they never had a referendum. Then they unlawfully carried the majority they obtain from a different parliamentary system to the new constitution. Then they had undated letters of resignation from MPs. Then they extended the term of their office without a referendum.

In the past parlimentry system failed , although there were educated people in the Parliment. Because they were power hungry. Used to cross the floor every other day.Therefore Executive Presidency must remain for ever. But the President with executive powers, must not mis-use his powers.
