Show solidarity- Jaliya tells US Lankans

4 March 2012 04:10 pm - 31     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Sri Lankan Ambassador in US Jaliya Wickramasuriya called upon Sri Lankan Americans to show solidarity with their Sri Lankan brethren.

In this month’s webcast Ambassador Wickramasuriya articulates what Sri Lanka expects from her sons and daughters now living in the United States, in communicating these serious concerns to the concerned US authorities.

He also provides an update on the situation regarding Sri Lanka at the ongoing UNHRC 19th Session in Geneva.

The US said it would support a resolution that might be brought against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.

Ambassador Wickramasuriya explains how and why such a resolution can jeopardise Sri Lanka’s reconciliation process that is already underway.

I thought the Sri Lankans who emigrated to the US are now US CITIZENS. Dont they take a pledge as a citizen of the "HONOR & DEFEND' that country?
So he is asking them to now go against their pledge. It will be better if he told them to leave that country and go back to Sri Lanka and shout on the street. s here. That would have been more patriotic!! And they call him an Ambassardor.

    TMA Monday, 05 March 2012 07:49 AM

First of all isn't it important for Sri Lankans (here & abroad) to know what is exactly mentioned in the 'Resolution'. Usually educated ppl won't oppose unless they know what's in it?

Typical Sri Lankan. When riding hight they do not care two hoots from the common man. When cornered the tune changes. Ha!

Dear Ambassador, your Press Release mill and youtube clips show you wining and dining with a couple of retired US ambassadors and Sri Lankans in the US. They are all aimed at the Sri Lankan media. We never see you engage US policy makers! Why have you failed to convince US policy makers even when the Government of Sri Lanka is spending millions of dollars to help you and your Embassy by providing you the assistance of a PR agency?!!!

I wonder why people forget the past like this . Its funny that those who clamor for SF's freedom were the best anti war jokers who wanted the country lose. The SF is a disloyal and greedy individual who suffers for what he had done. He sold (betrayed) his soldiers just get some cheap propaganda mileage. Now he has become the one and only war hero while all others risk war crime charges . Why we protect MR, because he was the best leader so far we had ..if we are to get find a better leader to replaces , we have to protect the country's stability and let it develop. Any discernible will agree that the present jokers in the opposition is incapable of doing what MR has done. Why we should oppose foreign intervention .. if you can't understand that .. I do not what to say.. those who support foreign interventions are no different than those kandiyan fools who betrayed the country to British 200 years ago.

Your job is to talk to US policy makers! By appearing on videos are you trying to hoodwink people in Sri Lanka that you are doing your job? The tax payers in Sri Lanka spend billions of dollars to keep you in Washington and for a PR company to help you. Why are you appealing to Sri Lankans!? Do you even talk to anyone at US State Department?

Growing prosperity? It is only applicable for politicians and their stooges. We agree to the critics of the fact that SL government posing of any initiative only due to international presure. "Zero casualty" has turned out to be 8,000 death. Lof of truth has yest to come out and it will come out only through international presurre. Even adequate evidence is available for bombing hospitals, slaughtering surrented LTTE and executing suspected LTTE members etc

    Even after stopping DUAL CITIZENSHIP..

Sanath de Silva Sunday, 04 March 2012 09:03 PM

Why is this man addressing the Sri Lankans living in the US? His job is to present the GOSL arguments to the US officials. We are not bringing this resolution against the GOSL.
By the way you reminded me of Wijeweera by staring unabatedlt at the teleprompter. Awful presentation and looked like a 5th grader. You should have done it in your native language.

This man should come back to Sri Lanka his in efficiency is what has brought about the US resolution in Geneva .There is work to be done in the US and we need a much better person for the Job.It may be even better to appoint a prominent Sri Lankan living in the US and even taken up US citizenship - there are several - as the countries Ambassador. Most Middle east oil exporting countries just do that.

Srilankans LOVE their motherland specially when they are away and Srilankans are proud to say that they are Srilankans. No need to tell them about solidarity. If you try to show your stupidity abroad like what Jaliya says above you will be considered as an outcast.

Sunil de Zoysa Monday, 05 March 2012 04:32 AM

Responsible and serious world leaders send their top most diplomats to Washington because those leaders know Americans are serious people. Sri Lanka too sent her top diplomats to Washington and unlike now US took Sri Lanka seriously. I have nothing against you and I know you are a very nice guy. But the fact is what experience you have about foreign affairs except tea business? What credentials do you have to gain respect and recognition from the international community? Those things matter very much. As you are very well aware all the influential Sri Lankan professionals who worked very closely with the Embassy in the past, do not want to participate in any of the functions Embassy organizes now and I am certain you know the reason. Your job is not to call upon Sri Lankans but to call upon and deal with the State Department. But the unfortunate fact is they do not take you seriously without experience and credentials.
