Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Vice-President Minister Sarath Amunugama today said the party had unanimously decided to make a request to party Chairman and President Maithripala Sirisena, not to reappoint Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran.

Addressing a news conference held at party headquarters, he said they had decided that it would be in the best interest of the party, the country and the Government if Mr. Mahendran was not reappointed.

Good move. UNP leadership should think country comes first rather than the friendship.

Mahendran was Managing Director of HSBC Private Banking Singapore. This is an outfit of HSBC looking after the wealth of the rich. Similarly, he was Chief Investment Officer of Emirates National Bank, Dubai’s wealth management division. He is an economics graduate of Oxford University and worked in the Central bank in his early career. The question is whether he is suitable for the position. No doubt he has excellent investment management skills (he was a regular commentator in BBC on Singapore and Far East economy)and has the personality to market our country internationally, will be a good person to talk to IMF, World Bank. So, it is good to have him as the face of the central bank and have competent economists to advise him and strong governance and oversight systems to ensure the Bank functions according to its policies and laws of Sri Lanka. Cabraal was on the other hand a very clever accountant at Ford Rhodes Thornton but doesn’t have the personality for a international audience.

Mahendran must be reappointed unless proved beyond reasonable doubt that he was dishonest. He is a international banker and an asset to Sri Lanka.

In a civil court has to be proved beyond reasonable doubt. In business world it is not so.But in an uncivilized primitive political world any thing is ok.
