Jayalalitha re-elected as CM despite pending cases against her

How else does one explain the return of Jayalalitha Jayaram as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu; she had two cases filed against her amongst others for  acquiring wealth wholly disproportionate to her income. It was in 2001 that she was first found guilty by a five- member bench  of the Supreme Court; (almost an year earlier she had been found guilty of abusing her position to acquire property at undervalued prices by a lower court) of misappropriation and that her appointment as Chief Minister at that time was  not legal and valid.
Among the assets she is said to have acquired were palatial Bungalows in and around Chennai, land including agricultural land, tea estates in the Nilgiris and gold including Jewellery. She was also accused of floating a number of companies and also of purchasing a number of companies when she was the Chief Minister. Jayalalitha also faced Income tax cases and cases relating to foreign remittances. The Income Tax and foreign remittance cases have apparently not been concluded as yet. They were said to be worth not millions, but billions of Dollars. She claims that her wealth has been over-valued and that  she was being subjected to a political witch hunt by the DMK. The tenacity with which the DMK has pursued this matter has been remarkable, but it had taken the authorities 18 long years to finally conclude this case.

Be that as it may, corruption indeed is India’s problem; our principle concern is of course the bridge over land, which some Indian imperialists are seeking to build to take over Sri Lanka. Most fortunately for us Jayalalitha is also opposed to its construction.  Jayalalitha had conveyed her concern to the then PM Manmohan Singh in two letters. In one letter that she was totally against the bridge project and insisted that the matter be viewed not merely as a project to promote economic cooperation but as a vital issue concerning the security of Tamil Nadu and India. She had further stated that the LTTE had brought a new “gun culture” and the horror of suicide bombing, this, she had said would facilitate horrific terrorism. She claimed in   her letters that the LTTE was not interested in peace and that it was unwise, and not in India’s interest to contemplate  a bridge to Lanka. Though the LTTE is no more, I hope and pray that she would oppose the construction of a bridge or tunnel to connect Lanka. She had also opposed to reviving the ferry service at that time, I hope she comes around to agreeing to it now.

Jayalalitha, it is said, is interested in closer relations between our two countries, we must get our act together to ensure that our Tamil citizens convey to  her that they are treated with dignity, have equal opportunity and have a say not only in deciding on their destiny in a united country but have a say in the management of the whole country with power at the Centre. After getting our act together, we must invite her here to see for herself; we would then not only silence the Diaspora but also the so-called ‘international community’ which has been harassing us at the influence of the Tamil Diaspora in their countries. We must develop close ties with South India; in particular with Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh; we should have Consulates in these States to promote trade and investment and seek to establish greater economic integration; we can also develop closer political relations with these States, for we have had relations with them for centuries.
