An investigation had been launched by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) on the reports that some resorts located in the Mirissa Bay had refused to serve food or provide accommodation to locals because of their 'unruly behaviour'.
Responding to a Daily Mirror article SLTDA said it would immediately investigate into the matter and initiate appropriate action according to the direction of the Minister of Tourism Development.
Following a preliminary investigation, the Authority had found that some of the restaurants in the area were not registered under the SLTDA.
“Both the Ministry and SLTDA recognise the principle of equality and nondiscrimination in all aspects including the business of tourism and to work towards the continued growth of the tourism industry in a secure and sustainable manner in order to benefit the national economy,” the statement said.

This discrimination at Mirrisa has been going on for the last 10 years. I too was turned down and I then decided never to visit Mirrisa. At last "Yahapalanaya" in action.

I must commend Trinco Blue a hotel used often by many working in the East during the conflict. The staff at the hotel remember this and try to accommodate our requests even though they now enjoy a full house after the end of the war. Sensible advice. This gives the hotel owner rights too. If the guests breaks the terms of the booking in regard to behaviour and number of guests per room the guest can be blacklisted on a multi agent data base.

Very true. Once my cousin gave a call to a guesthouse and asked in Sinhala whether a room is available. They said all rooms were occupied. Few minutes later another cousin living abroad and has a foreign accent asked whether rooms were available. Then we were able to book 2 rooms.

It has been going on for more than 20 years, I believe. Similar incident happened in mid 90s to us but we managed to get in.

There will always come a time when they will beg local tourists for their patronage and at that time we must show them their nakedness. Not all locals are what they think they are. 99% are decent folks who want to spend a decent holiday suffering their insipid cuisine!

You saw what happened to British tourist at Htota smashed by Htota Mayor. Similarly Southern Province politiccs are a law unto themselves with their catchers. The Mirissa hotels will lose business with one incident - so they are careful. Let govt give police protection from 6pm to 2am.

if you need to go to Mirissa select the hotel you want and then book trough Agoda or Booking.com . they cannot refuse your entry.

SLTDA, local drunkards, perverts and trouble makers are not tourists, they ruin the image of Sri Lankans abroad. They have enough other local bars and restaurants to spend their good times.
