The government intends to introduce certain amendments to the proposed Online Safety Bill at the committee stage in Parliament, the Attorney General informed the Supreme Court today.
Additional Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne made these remarks when the Special Determination petitions filed challenging the constitutionality of the Online Safety Bill were taken up before the Supreme Court three-judge-bench. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

AGs submission confirms that Government was aware that the Bill contained disputable provisions.

Trying a fast one to push the bill

So a step back only. The petitioners must insist on these certain amendments made known beforehand so we know if there is skullduggery at Committee stage or speaker signs a wrong bill as happened earlier.

The petitioners should not accept the assurances of the AG. They must call for a totally new Bill containing the amendments, study them and then proceed. There could be many a slip between the cup and the lip.

Then the Petitioners should have asked why in heavens name they made a gazette notification in the first instance.

Good if the SC orders that the proposed Amendments are made before submission to Court.

President - proposes / Wijeyadasa - composes / Opposition - opposes / Courts - exposes / AG - compromises.

This AG has become a joker. Why can’t he tell in advance rather than when the matter is dealt at the courts
