Colombo, March 14 (Daily Mirror) - President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he hopes to gradually relax the import of private vehicles starting from next year.

The President made these remarks while attending a gathering organized by the United Youth Union, titled "Future of the Youth," held yesterday (12) at Taprobane Entertainment.

"I cannot see vehicle imports happening this year, but we would like to do it gradually starting next year," he said.

The President said that he knows there is a problem in the existing car market, but under the balance of payments, the government has allowed the import of everything other than vehicles.

"If the import of cars are allowed, then there is a possibility of the country going backwards, but we hope to import vehicles in a systematic, step-by-step manner. We will import essential types of vehicles as the first step," he said.

This year, the government allowed buses to be imported to transport tourists, he said.

While raising questions, the youth told the President that the current prices in the used car market has doubled and tripled and that there is no proper price control.

Without addressing the corruption and recovering the stolen money the general public is put to misery by denying their business opportunities. What action has been taken against the persons who bankrupted the country although there is a SC verdict? It is unfortunate that the President is using the public as guineapigs.

Sheer madness, too early to start importing vehicles, our roads are already chocked to the hilt with motor vehicles, despite the vehicle ban, just imagine the outcome with more joining the network. Please allow import of vehicles just for emergency services. Having said so, we all know Sri Lanka's public transport network is worse than third world. Its imperative we seek some foreign expertise and attempt to improve the standards of different modes of public travel, once again, if possible, free from political influence.

Good public transport that is the solution impossible for everyone to own a car even if prices are falling and if prices are doubling it is crazy due tohigh capital cost and having one or two passengers per car on already congested roads does not make sense, again the better solution is public transport

Introduce Monthly Quota with Professional Advice Thursday, 14 March 2024 11:27 AM

Introduce a monthly quota of 50 to 100 thousand hybrid or electric vehicles. If a current vehicle is deregistered and sold of as scarp or parts, maybe a 5% to 20% discount voucher can be used to offset a new vehicle of the same or lower category.

Introduce Road Pricing to reduce Congestion Thursday, 14 March 2024 11:42 AM

As many are aware, most roads are congested especially during peak hours. Introduce a peak hour pass of maybe Rs25,000/- per month or a daily pass of Rs800/- to drive a private vehicle. This will discourage peak hour driving and should ease traffic congestion. Use the money collected to hire enforcement officers and station them at major roads. Win win situation for all - reduce global warming, less congestion, some employment and extra funds for road maintenance.

2019 came, and we were enjoying life to the fullest , with the youth in particular purchasing cars and houses and going on holidays with their friends. Then Covid infected all over and followed by the economic crisis and the great treasury robbery which made us all suffer(excluding the 225)and the beneficiaries not apprehended to date.Hope that the pre 2019 would arrive by the introduction of car imports.

impose a large capital gain tax on vehicle sales. that will reduce the inflated prices. restrict the importation of brand new vehicles, and increase the acceptable vehicle age to 10 to 15 years.

He thinks youth can be bought out by importing cars again Thursday, 14 March 2024 01:54 PM

Is the biggest issue facing the youth at the gathering the lack of new imported vehicles. Even looking at old man Ranil, most youth would want to vote for anyone else.
