Trinity College will hold the edge when they lock horns with traditional rival St. Anthony’s College in their inter school Under-19 rugby League encounter today at Pallekele with kick-off at 4 pm.
Interestingly, although the match is being played in Pallekele, the Antonians will be the designated hosts.
The fixture was originally scheduled for Nittawela, but had to be shifted due to the match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand Under-85kg match at the same venue on Sunday and the venue prioritised for international training commitments.
Trinity enter this encounter high on confidence after a commanding performance in their opening game, where they outclassed Lumbini College with authority.
The defending League champions have carried forward their fine form from the Sevens circuit, where they clinched the prestigious President’s Trophy, showcasing their depth and cohesion.
Led by Shan Althaf, Trinity have developed into a well-balanced unit, blending power and structure in the forwards with flair and discipline in the backline.
His deputies, Nisith Kumarasinghe and Udan Wijekoon, have provided strong support, ensuring stability and leadership across the park.
Achintha Jayasena is another star playing as a pack leader but his pace is not second to a speedy three-quarter.
Their ability to maintain structure while playing an expansive brand of rugby has made them one of the most dangerous outfits in this year’s competition.
Trinity’s forwards have consistently laid a solid platform, allowing the backs to capitalise with speed and precision.
In contrast, St. Anthony’s College will be looking to bounce back after their opening defeat against Isipathana College in Colombo.
Although they started that game brightly, the Antonians struggled to sustain intensity for the full 70 minutes, an area they must address if they are to challenge a formidable Trinity outfit.
Antonian skipper Vimukthi Kodikara is out of this game due to an injury. The leadership role will be taken over by Akesh Sampath with some outstanding players such as Dinuka Jayasundara and Yohan Gunawardana in the Antonians line up.
With momentum, structure and confidence on their side, Trinity will start as firm favourites. However, Antonians have the potential to spring a surprise if they can produce a complete performance.
Referee Gihan Yatawara will be at centre after a long break in the central hills.
