Sanjani Edirisinghe of President’s College Nawala stole the limelight on the third day of the All-Island School Games 34th Athletics Championships continued at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday (03).
The promising athlete had the satisfaction of erasing a 16-year-old record as she won the Under-16 Girls’ 200 metres event with a record breaking performance of 25.47 seconds.
Sanjani also bettered the previous record of 26.00s set by D. B. C. Jayamanna of Tholangamuwa MMV way back in 2002.
In fact, this was Sanjani’s second meet record of the day following her success in the 400m event where she returned a time of 56.91s. She bettered her own previous record of 58.67s set in 2017.
Meanwhile, Hirusha Heshan and Rumesh Tharanga both from St. Peter’s College Bambalapitiya also had the satisfaction of setting up their second record of the meet.
Heshan won the Under-16 Boys’ 200m and the long jump with a record breaking performance while Tharanga clinched the Under-16 javelin throw event following his success in the discus throw.
