SLMA hosts Certificate Awarding Ceremony for FEI-Certified Groom Course Graduates



The Certificate Awarding Ceremony of the FEI-Certified Groom Course was held in grand style at the Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA), Diyatalawa, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s equestrian training landscape. The event took place under the distinguished patronage of Colonel P.A.D.S.W. Ponnapperuma USP psc, Chief Instructor and Overlooking Director - Academics of the Academy, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

The internationally recognised course, conducted from October 1-3, 2025, was led by Jackie Potts, an International FEI Level 5 Coach, and focused on developing professional competencies in grooming, feeding, handling, and the day-to-day care of horses. Designed to uplift equestrian standards, the programme emphasised professionalism, welfare, and excellence within the field.



Honouring Excellence and Dedication

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of certificates to participants who successfully completed the course. Lance Corporal Dayarathna of the Sri Lanka Army Equestrian Squadron was awarded the Outstanding Groom Certificate for his exceptional performance during the training.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Ishanga Mahipala, President of the Sri Lanka Equestrian Association, Kosala Wickramanayaka, Secretary of the Association, and Dr. W.M.M.B. Wijckoon, Veterinary Surgeon of the Sri Lanka Police Mounted Division, along with senior military officers, instructors, and trainees from the Army Equestrian Squadron.



Tokens of Appreciation and Collaborative Spirit

In recognition of their valuable contributions, mementos and tokens of appreciation were exchanged among key stakeholders.  Ishanga Mahipala, Kosala Wickramanayaka, and Major Tiran Palihakkara, Officer Commanding of the Army Equestrian Squadron, participated in the presentation of gifts, symbolising the close collaboration between the military and civilian equestrian bodies.

Gratitude and Future Aspirations

In her closing acknowledgement, Jackie Potts received heartfelt appreciation for her unwavering dedication and professional guidance throughout the course. Participants and guests alike commended her passion and expertise, which played a pivotal role in enhancing Sri Lanka’s equestrian capabilities.

Special appreciation was also extended to the Sri Lanka Equestrian Association and partnering institutions for their ongoing commitment to advancing equestrian education and professional grooming standards within the country.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Alfie Ameer (Vonfidel Ranch) and Leora Nanayakkara (Premadasa Riding School), who congratulated all participants for their dedication and perseverance. They expressed optimism that this initiative would inspire continued growth and excellence in Sri Lanka’s equestrian community.

The successful completion of the FEI-Certified Groom Course stands as a testament to Sri Lanka’s growing commitment to international equestrian standards and the development of skilled professionals who uphold the highest values of horse care and management.
