A well-known Sinhala saying when translated into English will read as: “Saving the body and waiting”. Most people entrusted with public or people’s interests practice the slogan and so is the brought-back controversial new chairman of the player Selection Committee of the Sri Lanka cricket team.
Wickremasinghe made public utterances two years ago related to internal squabbles among players, conspiracy, fixing, jockeying for places in the team through political interference and power-struggles after he returned with the team from a disastrous World Cup as the head of the Selection Committee.
He has now ironically been brought back again as the head of the Selection Committee by Sri Lanka Cricket which dismissed his revelations as “baseless” following a protest by players at the time.
Yesterday, at his first Press conference as the new head of the Selection Committee he told the media that he submitted a document to the Sports Minister at the time Roshan Ranasinghe citing what had happened or was happening.
“You can get it from him (Ranasinghe) or ask him”, Wickremasinghe told journalists who raised the issue.
Ranasinghe as Sports Minister said he ordered his Ministry officials to conduct an inquiry over Wickremasinghe’s allegations citing the Prevention of Sports Offences Act of 2019.
Heaven only knows who speaks the truth in this country.
